Canadian authorities bust a major drug smuggling operation, seizing $48 million worth of cocaine and arresting nine individuals.

Project Pelican Uncovers Massive Drug Network

A year-long investigation, dubbed “Project Pelican,” has led to a significant drug bust in Canada, resulting in the arrest of nine individuals, including seven of Indian origin. The operation uncovered a sophisticated network involved in smuggling cocaine from the U.S. into the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Key Findings of the Investigation

  • Record Seizure: Authorities seized 479 kg of cocaine, with an estimated street value of $48 million, marking the largest drug bust in the history of the Peel Regional Police.
  • Smuggling Routes: The network utilized commercial trucking routes between the U.S. and Canada to transport the narcotics.
  • International Connections: Investigations revealed ties to Mexican cartels and U.S.-based distributors.

Arrests and Charges

As of June 6, nine individuals face a total of 35 charges related to firearm and drug offenses. The accused were apprehended while attempting to smuggle cocaine into the GTA.

Crackdown on Drug Smuggling

This operation is part of a broader effort by Canadian authorities to combat international drug trafficking networks. Recent initiatives include “Project Castillo” in Toronto, which resulted in the seizure of 835 kg of cocaine.
